The aim of the Seveso II Directive is two-fold. Firstly, the directive aims at the prevention of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances. Secondly, as accidents do continue to occur, the directive aims at the limitation of the consequences of such accidents not only for man (safety and health aspects) but also for the environment (environmental aspect).
The new European chemicals legislation is intended to give the public greater protection from intentionally produced chemicals. It is the biggest and most important regulation in twenty years.
REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) will completely change the way chemicals are controlled.

EPA's mission is to protect human health and the environment.
The convention promotes open exchange of information and calls on exporters of hazardous chemicals to use proper labeling, include directions on safe handling, and inform purchasers of any known restrictions or bans.
The new system, which was called "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)", addresses classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements, including labels and safety data sheets.
